The best backend for a two-person Godot roguelike and the best backend for a 60-person cross-platform competitive shooter are not the same product, and any list that ranks them 1 through 10 is optimizing for clicks, not for your decision.

Cross-platform account linking is close to table stakes across this market, not a differentiator any one platform owns; every vendor above except Beamable documents it natively. The real question is how far linking reaches: AccelByte, PlayFab, and Pragma extend it to console; Metaplay and Unity Gaming Services can only link the platforms they hold identity for, which doesn't include console; LootLocker's console reach is authentication only. 

Best for Unity Mobile and Live-Service: Unity Gaming Services or Metaplay

Unity Gaming Services and Metaplay are the two real answers, and they solve it differently. UGS gives you the deepest Unity Editor integration through à-la-carte services (Authentication, Cloud Save, Economy, Analytics, Remote Config) without leaving the Unity dashboard, backed by the largest existing pool of Unity developers. One trade-off to know going in: Unity discontinued its own dedicated-server product, Multiplay, in March 2026, licensing it to a third party whose pricing and docs aren't public yet. If real-time multiplayer is on your roadmap, that's a gap to plan around, not a footnote.

Best for Indie Teams and Fastest to First Playable: LootLocker or AccelByte

There are two different questions hiding in "best for indie," and they have different answers. If the goal is the fastest possible path to a first playable, a hobby project, a game jam, a prototype you want online this week, the lightweight tools win.

LootLocker ships officially maintained SDKs across Unity, Unreal, and Godot with a free, permanent non-commercial tier built for exactly this. For minimum time to a working online feature with minimum operational surface, start with one of these.

But "indie" and "hobbyist" aren't the same thing, and for a serious indie team that intends to ship commercially and scale, AccelByte is a legitimately strong choice, arguably the stronger one. The barrier to entry is lower than its enterprise reputation suggests: free forever during development with no time limit, up to 30 peak concurrent users per day, GDPR/CCPA-compliant out of the box, and a PCCU model that actually favors small games. AccelByte's own breakdown of three studios that assumed it wasn't for them puts real numbers on it: a game at roughly 100 daily peak concurrent players runs about $52/month, and 500 PCCU about $350/month. The proof that indies actually ship on it is concrete, not aspirational: Genun Games, a four-person Seattle studio, built the racing-shooter hybrid Ascent Rivals on it, and FuzzyBot shipped the co-op action RPG Lynked: Banner of Spark, a smaller-scale multiplayer title, on the same platform. Heroic Labs is the other credible pick for this tier, self-hosted Nakama is free and fast to stand up if your team has any backend comfort, giving you room to grow into managed hosting later.

The real dividing line isn't studio size, it's whether real-time multiplayer is on your roadmap. LootLocker has no matchmaking or dedicated-server capability of any kind, and Beamable has none beyond a relay for tolerant genres. That's fine if you're not building real-time multiplayer yet. If you are, or you will be, that's the thing to plan around, and it's where a platform with first-party servers earns its place even for a small team.

Where Epic Online Services and PlayFab Fit

Two platforms don't map cleanly onto the categories above, and both are worth understanding on their own terms.

Epic Online Services is free identity, cross-play, and social plumbing backed by Fortnite-scale infrastructure, not a full backend: no dedicated-server hosting, no general-purpose commerce, no LiveOps tooling. The most useful way to think about it for most studios isn't EOS-versus-a-real-backend but EOS-plus-one: pair its free identity layer with a real backend for everything it doesn't cover, rather than treating the two as competing options. The one caveat worth weighing deliberately is data sovereignty, EOS is operated by Epic, which runs the Epic Games Store and competes in the market your player data touches. For many teams that's a non-issue; for others it's a real concern.

PlayFab carries the deepest first-party Microsoft and Xbox trust of anything here, with the most AAA-weighted roster (Minecraft, Forza Horizon 5, Street Fighter 6). It's also the most structurally locked-in platform on this list: Multiplayer Servers run on Azure only, there's no self-hosting at any tier, and its March 2026 free-tier cut now gates the replacement behind a commitment to ship on Xbox. A strong default for a lot of games, as long as you go in understanding the Azure relationship you're signing up for.

So Which One Is Best?

If the four responsibilities are the "why," here are the systems that do the work. This is roughly the anatomy of every game backend, whether you build it or adopt one. I'll keep each to what it does and where it gets hard, because the difficulty is the part worth knowing before you decide who owns it.

None of them. All of them. It depends on the game, which is the only honest answer and the reason this page is a map instead of a ranking. 

  • If you're on Unreal shipping to the console, AccelByte and PlayFab lead.

  • If you're Unity-first on mobile, Unity Gaming Services and Metaplay are the natural shortlist.

  • If you need real-time competitive dedicated servers, AccelByte is the only first-party answer, with Heroic Labs close behind via a partner.

  • If you need proven scale with a standard SLA, AccelByte, Heroic Labs, or PlayFab.

  • If you must own the source, Nakama and Metaplay.

The platforms don't sort into better and worse. They sort into fits-your-game and don't. Figure out your engine, your platforms, your budget shape, and how much real-time multiplayer you actually need, and this list collapses from ten options to two or three worth a serious trial. Pick the two or three that match, then try them. That's the exercise that actually answers the question.
