Kartini Day: Empowering Women in the Workplace

The involvement of women in the digital world is increasing rapidly. In gaming itself, many female professional gamers and gaming streamers are on the rise. Nevertheless, some women might still think that the game development industry is a scary male-dominated world. However, in the past few years, we’ve seen inequality in the game industry being called out after years of silence and pain - people in the game industry are reevaluating how they treat others in the business. We believe that it’s the beginning of a better industry in which everyone should be treated as an equal.

The issue of gender equality receives special attention from organizations globally, and more companies are aware that practicing equality is not only the right thing to do but also an opportunity to explore a wider talent pool. At AccelByte, we offer opportunities for anyone to work in the game and software engineering field. In 2021, we’ve hired more women and we’re committed to ensuring that AccelByte is a place where everyone can thrive. We hold the principle of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), giving the same chance to all qualified applicants for a position here regardless of their gender, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, age, or disability.

Whoever they are and whatever their background, AccelByte supports all of their employees in their passion to learn and grow, just like one of our Producers, Monic experienced.

“One of my pivotal career moments happened when I changed my career from Human Resources to Engineering as a Product Manager and Producer. Managers in AccelByte were so open when I showed my interest in Product Management, they gave me the chance to try out the role and to allow me to decide whether or not I would want the career shift - and I feel like I was born for this!” -- Monic Andyani (AccelByte Producer)

On April 21, 2021, Indonesia commemorates Kartini Day, the birth date of Raden Adjeng Kartini, who is a role model in women’s empowerment. In her short life at the turn of the 20th century, Kartini wrote prolifically and was a strong advocate for women’s education, and she continues to be honored every year as women in Indonesia continue to reach new heights in the Indonesian economy.

“Never give up if you still want to try. Do not let regret come, because you’re one step away from winning.”

“Keep dreaming, keep dreaming, dream as long as you can dream! If there is no dream, what will become of life! Real-life is cruel.”

Kartini’s writings continue to be a source of inspiration for women in Indonesia. To celebrate her life, we asked a few of our employees their thoughts on how women can be successful in the gaming industry:

“The things that I keep saying to achieve my potential have always been these two things. The first one is never to be discouraged by the things you encounter because the bigger the purpose is, the bigger the obstacles are and by grace, I will make it. The second thing might seem like a contradiction to the first one: take a rest, look around, breathe, and you will be fine.

I assure you that the things that you have chosen or will choose have already been considered thousands of times. You have the right to pursue it, to conquer it, and to own it. The future is for everyone, including you.” -- Olivia Putri Rosmala (AccelByte Talent Acquisition)

“To me, the key to optimizing potential growth is to keep learning. It takes more than just learning on our own. Learn from others, do not rely on what we already know, because every person has a different perspective, and we can always learn from it. Learn to accept criticism and feedback from others and turn it into better outcomes in the future because we grow through what we go through.

Self-doubt kills more dreams. There might come one day when you'll feel like you're about to give up chasing your passion, but don't give up! Keep going! Even if you don’t end up at the point that you desire, you learn something through the process.” Nadhifa --(AccelByte Technical Writer)

“I believe that finding a passion is the key to achieving my potential growth. However, the journey is like "looking for a needle in a haystack". The process can be so long and painful. We often fail over and over again. However, without bravery, we cannot get what we deserve and move towards the path we’ve dreamt of. Don't let failures hold you back for very long, but keep moving forward and opening up new opportunities. Once our passion has been found, we take a responsibility to keep and protect it, or even dig deeper because we know that we’re destined for big things.

Be bold, resilient, persistent, and courageous. Dream high, don't settle until you get it. Always be grateful and don't fear failure. Don't let your negative thinking discourage you. It's okay to make a mistake and live full of failures but as a wise man once said "Don't let your failures define you, but let your failures refine you."
