Game Backend Vendor Evaluation Scorecard

Game Backend Vendor Evaluation Scorecard

A game backend vendor comparison usually starts as a spreadsheet. You list the providers down one side, the features across the top, and start checking boxes. The trouble is that the boxes do not decide it. Two studios can pick the same provider off the same grid, and one is making a great call while the other is setting up a painful year.

What separates them is fit: team size, budget, the platforms they ship on, and how much multiplayer the game actually needs. A feature grid measures none of that.

This scorecard flips the order. Instead of handing you a ranking, it asks six questions about your game and weights the evaluation criteria for your situation, so the dimensions that matter most for a competitive console shooter are not the ones that matter for a mobile live game. Then you score the vendors yourself. Nothing is pre-scored, on purpose. A vendor scoring its own competitors for you would not be worth trusting, so the tool handles the weighting and gives you an honest read on each dimension, and you make the calls.

It will not tell you AccelByte is the answer, because for a lot of studios reading this, it might not be. AccelByte sits in the comparison as one option among the ones you are already weighing, and the note on each dimension says plainly where other platforms win. If a lighter or cheaper option covers your top priorities, the scorecard is built to show you that.

Here is how it works: Answer six questions about your project and studio, see the dimensions your game should weight heaviest then pick the vendors you are considering and finally score each vendor from 1 to 5. Your weighted total updates as you go. When you're done, you can download the scorecard as a PDF you can take to your lead, CTO, or next planning meeting.

If you want the reasoning behind the questions first, read How to Choose a Game Backend: Questions That Matter, which walks through the five questions and three gut-checks this scorecard is built on. For a closer look at the providers themselves, see Best Game Backend Providers in 2026: A Fair Comparison. Otherwise, start scoring below.

Derived from your answers. The higher the bar, the more a wrong choice on that dimension costs you. Change an answer above and this updates.

Weighted fit to your priorities

Score at least one dimension to see totals. A total reflects how well a vendor covers the dimensions your game weights heaviest, not a generic ranking.

Cost isn't a row here, because it depends on the vendor and your scale and a 1 to 5 score would mislead. Model it properly with the AccelByte TCO calculator once you've shortlisted.

Done. Your scorecard is ready — check your downloads folder.

This scorecard is a starting framework, not a verdict. Backend vendor capabilities and pricing change often, so treat each read as a prompt for your own diligence and confirm anything that matters against the vendor's current documentation before you decide.
