PlayFab is a Microsoft-managed service and PlayFab Multiplayer Servers run on Azure virtual machines. There is no AWS, Google Cloud, bare-metal, or self-hosted PlayFab deployment path. AccelByte can operate dedicated servers across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and bare metal.
On March 11, 2026, Microsoft cut PlayFab’s free Development Mode by roughly 99%, from an allowance around 100,000 users down to a hard cap of 1,000 lifetime player accounts per title. The replacement, Foundation Mode, is free but only for studios that commit to shipping on Xbox, and it excludes dedicated servers, A/B testing, segmentation, UGC, and custom telemetry.
It depends on scale. Under a modeled moderate-complexity usage profile, PlayFab is cheaper than AccelByte’s Complete package at roughly 10,000 to 100,000 DAU, and more expensive above roughly 200,000 to 500,000 DAU.
